Peanut Card (Beta) Review 2026: Is It Worth It?

Overview

The Peanut Card is a virtual Visa issued by Squirrel Labs, currently in closed beta. It spends from a self-custodial smart contract wallet, which means your stablecoins stay under your control rather than sitting on a company balance sheet. That distinction matters more than most card marketing admits, and it cuts both ways.

Spending US dollars against a US dollar balance costs nothing. Peanut adds no fee on purchases, no monthly charge, no issuance fee, and no cost to load funds. Spending in any other currency converts at Visa's network rate and picks up Visa's standard one percent International Service Assessment. That one percent goes to the network, not to Peanut, but it lands on your statement either way. It is fair to call this a low cost card. It is not a zero fee card abroad.

How to get the Peanut Card (Beta)

  1. Sign up for the Peanut app using early access code zeshan. Peanut is invite only, so a code is required to create an account.
  2. Complete identity verification with a passport or national ID. This is required before any card can be issued.
  3. Join the card waitlist, which is separate from app access.
  4. Wait for approval. The team admits new members in waves.
  5. Once approved, the virtual Visa activates and spends anywhere Visa is accepted.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Funds are stored in your own smart contract wallet, meaning no company can freeze or lend them.
  • There are no monthly fees, annual fees, issuance fees, or loading fees.
  • Spending dollars against a dollar balance incurs no additional cost.
  • Deposits can be made through SEPA, ACH, and other local bank systems.
  • It enables immediate manual provisioning into major mobile wallets.

Cons

  • Virtual only. No physical card, and no announced date for one.
  • Closed beta with a slow queue.
  • No cashback and no rewards program.
  • Non dollar spending costs one percent through Visa's ISA.
  • Identity verification is mandatory.
  • Self custody means lost access is permanent. Support cannot recover your wallet.

Is It Worth It?

People who hold stablecoins, want to spend them in the real world, and would rather accept the responsibility of holding their own keys than trust an exchange to stay solvent. If that responsibility sounds like a burden rather than a feature, a custodial card will serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Peanut card require an invite code?
Yes. Peanut is invite only. Use code zeshan to create an account. After that, the card has a separate waitlist.
Is the Peanut card safe?
It is self-custodial, meaning your funds remain in a wallet you control, and no company failure can take them. However, this comes with a risk: access relies on a passkey, and if you lose your phone without a working passkey backup in iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, no one can restore your wallet for youโ€”not support, not Squirrel Labs. Make sure to set up the backup before you deposit anything.
Are there any maintenance fees?
No monthly fee, no annual fee, no loading fee.
What does it cost to spend abroad?
Visa's network rate plus Visa's one percent ISA on any non-dollar transaction.
Can I use it in my country?
Peanut's fiat rails currently serve a limited set of corridors, primarily Latin America for receiving and parts of Europe, along with the US and UK for sending. Check peanut.me for your country before signing up.
