Overview
The Nexo Card is a Europe-only, dual-mode Mastercard, its defining feature. With one tap in the app you switch between Credit Mode (borrow fiat against your crypto as collateral, so you spend without selling or triggering a taxable event) and Debit Mode (spend directly from your crypto, stablecoin, or FIATx balances, which keep earning interest until the moment you pay). It's accepted at 100M+ Mastercard merchants with Apple Pay and Google Pay, and charges no monthly, annual, or inactivity fees.
The card is custodial, Nexo holds your assets (insured via Ledger Vault, Fireblocks and Lloyd's of London), so it's a trust-the-provider model, not self-custody. Cashback is up to 2% but comes with real strings: it's only paid in Credit Mode, only if you hold $5,000+ in your account, and the top rates require holding NEXO tokens as a percentage of your portfolio — and cashback is paid in volatile NEXO (or up to 0.5% in BTC). The honest base case is 0.5%. Note it's not available in the US, and physical-card ordering has been paused since January 2025.
Using Nexo Card's referral code at sign-up may unlock a welcome perk where the provider offers one. Availability and amounts are set by Nexo Card and vary by region — check their site for current terms.
Rating breakdown
How the Nexo Card scores across the categories we weigh into its overall 7.8/10.
Cashback & rewards
Nexo's 'up to 2%' cashback carries more conditions than almost any card here. It's earned only in Credit Mode, only if your account holds at least $5,000 in digital assets, and the rate is set by Loyalty Tier — which is determined by how much NEXO token you hold relative to the rest of your portfolio: Base 0.5% (no NEXO), Silver 0.7% (≥1% NEXO), Gold 1% (≥5%), Platinum 2% (≥10%). You can take cashback in NEXO tokens or a lower rate in BTC (0.1–0.5%). The catch reviewers stress: NEXO is volatile, so above Base tier you're effectively making a leveraged bet on the token — one analysis showed a ~25–30% NEXO price drop can wipe out an entire year's cashback. Base tier (0.5%, no NEXO required) is the only tier with no token-price risk. Debit-mode purchases earn no cashback at all.
| Tier | Requirement | Cashback | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | $5,000+ balance, no NEXO required | 0.5% NEXO or 0.1% BTC | Monthly cap by tier |
| Silver | ≥1% of portfolio in NEXO | 0.7% NEXO or 0.2% BTC | Monthly cap by tier |
| Gold | ≥5% of portfolio in NEXO | 1% NEXO or 0.3% BTC | Monthly cap by tier |
| Platinum | ≥10% of portfolio in NEXO | 2% NEXO or 0.5% BTC | Monthly cap by tier |

Pros & cons
Pros
- Unique dual-mode: switch between crypto-backed credit and direct debit in one tap
- Credit Mode lets you spend without selling — no taxable event in many jurisdictions
- No monthly, annual, or inactivity fees
- Low FX within EEA/UK (0.2% weekday); free ATM withdrawals up to tier limits
- Unspent Debit-Mode balances keep earning interest (up to ~14% APY by tier/asset)
- Cashback can be taken in BTC instead of the platform token
- Apple Pay and Google Pay; 100M+ Mastercard merchants; insured custody
Cons
- Custodial: Nexo holds your assets; not self-custody
- Cashback needs Credit Mode + $5,000 balance; top rates require holding volatile NEXO
- Cashback paid in NEXO can be wiped out by token price drops (leveraged-bet risk)
- Debit-mode purchases earn no cashback
- Not available in the US (or Canada, Australia, Switzerland per some sources)
- Physical card ordering paused since January 17, 2025 (virtual only)
- Credit Mode carries liquidation risk if collateral value falls
- Weekend and rest-of-world FX fees rise sharply (0.7% / up to 2.5%)
Is It Worth It?
Best for tax-conscious EEA/UK crypto holders with sizeable portfolios ($5,000+, ideally $20K+) who want to spend against their crypto via Credit Mode without selling, and who value the dual-mode flexibility. Good for those who'll keep balances earning interest in Debit Mode. A poor fit for US/APAC/LATAM residents, self-custody advocates, anyone who doesn't want NEXO token exposure (Base tier's 0.5% is the only token-risk-free option), or those wanting a simple high-cashback card.
